Our insight-driven sustainability solutions

Explore our LCA & footprinting services

At Foodprintsight, we offer a range of customized footprinting services to help you measure, understand, and reduce the environmental or social impact of food and agricultural products. Grounded in the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and aligned with international standards (ISO 14040/14044 and the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) framework), our services provide actionable sustainability insights into environmental and social impacts across the entire product life cycle – from raw material production to end-of-life. Our small-scale and personal approach allows us to work closely with you, ensuring flexible, cost-effective, and technically sound solutions.
Our services range from screening LCAs and full ISO-compliant assessments to scenario analysis, biodiversity footprinting, social LCA, and external cost assessments. We also support the development of custom tools and guidelines, and offer LCA reviews, advice and training to build internal capacity.
You can explore our services in more detail below. If you have any questions or would like to learn more, do not hesitate to contact us!

Screening LCA / carbon footprint

A screening study or quick scan provides a fast and cost-effective insight into your product’s environmental impact. Using a limited set of company-specific data (supplemented by industry averages or generic data), these exploratory LCAs identify key environmental hotspots—the areas in the supply chain with the highest impact.
A screening LCA can serve as input for subsidy applications, as an internal tool for product development, or as a first step toward a more detailed sustainability analysis.
These assessments can focus solely on carbon footprint or include multiple impact categories.

Full / in-depth LCAs

For a comprehensive and detailed assessment, we offer full LCAs based on company-specific data from your product’s supply chain. In-depth LCAs can be conducted for a single product, for multiple products, or with the specific aim to compare products to each other (i.e. comparative LCAs).
All our LCAs adhere to ISO 14040/14044 standards and align with the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology,  and, where applicable, specific Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs).
In-depth LCAs can be used for external communication and to make (comparative) claims, which requires an ISO-compliant review by a third-party. The studies can also serve as input for detailed sustainability strategies as well as ecolabel certification.

Affordable LCAs & carbon footprints for startups

If you’re a start-up in the food or agriculture sector and want to understand your product’s environmental footprint, getting started with a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can feel overwhelming. To support early-stage companies, we offer a tailored start-up package that makes environmental footprinting both accessible and affordable. This package provides practical insights into your product’s environmental impact, with a focus on key impact categories and hotspots. Results are presented in a clear, visual format, along with tailored recommendations. It’s an ideal solution for start-ups seeking credible insights to inform product development, investor conversations, or sustainability strategies—without the burden of a full-scale study.

Scenario analysis (tool)

If you’re in the product development phase, scenario analysis can help you to make well-informed decisions on how to optimize sustainability throughout your product’s life cycle, and thus supports eco-design. How would your product’s carbon footprint be affected when changing a certain ingredient, switching to a different energy source, or changing the recycled content of packaging? Exploring different scenarios can help to answer such questions and integrate sustainability at the core of your product design. We can also create a custom excel tool enabling you to calculate the environmental impact of your products independently.

With LCA scenario analysis you can evaluate the sustainability impact of design choices – like ingredients, packaging, or energy use – during product development.

Biodiversity footprint

Looking beyond just carbon or water footprints? A biodiversity footprint provides a holistic view of your product’s environmental impact by combining multiple LCA impact categories into a single biodiversity indicator.
Using the LCA approach, a biodiversity footprint assesses how different environmental pressures – such as greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication, water extraction, and land conversion – affect ecosystem functioning. This analysis helps pinpoint areas in the supply chain that exert high pressure on biodiversity.

Climate risk assessment & adaptation

While LCAs and carbon footprints reveal the impact of your operations on the environment, climate risk assessments explore the reverse: how climate change impacts your business.
Through climate risk assessments, we help organisations identify vulnerabilities to climate-related stressors along the supply chain.
We evaluate exposure and sensitivity to hazards using future climate scenarios, identify the most vulnerable elements, and develop strategies to strengthen climate change adaptation and resilience throughout the supply chain.
This is particularly relevant for producers that are capable of implementing adaptation strategies in their (agricultural) supply chain.

Social LCA

Sustainability extends beyond environmental factors – it also includes social dimensions. To get an understanding of social hotspots in your supply chain, you can carry out a social LCA. This social equivalent to a screening LCA identifies where in your supply chain social issues can be expected, as well as the nature of these risks (e.g.  labor conditions, fair wages, health and safety, and human rights). This is particularly valuable when sourcing ingredients from multiple countries with varying social and labor standards.

External Costs

What would be the price of your product if its impact on the environment would be included? External cost assessment monetizes environmental impacts by assigning economic values to factors such as pollution, resource depletion, and emissions.
Calculating external costs provides an more tangible and understandable way to present and compare environmental impacts. Calculating the external cost can be an (additional) output of a screening or full LCA.

Reviews

Have you conducted an LCA study and need a third-party review? We offer ISO-compliant LCA reviews according to ISO 14040/14044 standards, either as part of a review panel (for comparative claims) or as a single independent reviewer.
A critical review is similar to a peer review for scientific publications, and ensures that the LCA methodology aligns with ISO standards. It critically assesses, amongst others, the defined scope, data used, assumptions made and conclusions drawn.

Capacity Building and Training

Looking to enhance internal sustainability expertise? We offer tailored training and advisory services upon request, ranging from introductory sessions on climate change and Life Cycle Assessment, to advanced advice on e.g. modelling emissions from cultivation.
Our capacity building services provide teams with practical knowledge and insights to drive sustainability within their organization.

Methodology & standard development

The outcome of an LCA depends heavily on the choices made—such as system boundaries, data sources, allocation rules, and cut-off criteria. As life cycle assessments become more widely adopted, there’s an increasing need for consistency and harmonisation. We have experience in the development of LCA guidelines and standards for industry associations and product groups, ensuring a consistent approach and robust & comparable results. This includes coordinating stakeholder engagement, aligning with frameworks like the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), and coordinating the writing and review of technical documents. Whether for a sector initiative or a company-specific approach, we guide you through the full process of standard development.
